For over 35 years, I worked for NYSDOT. I started as an entry level Junior Engineer before progressing to managing bridge repair activities for over 800 bridges. I did bridge inspection to comply with NYSDOT and FHWA standards, and then managed a design team to develop plans as well as specifications for repairs to bridges.

During the last 14 years of my career, I was the Regional Structurers Management Engineer. I was responsible for providing structural integrity for over 3000 structures (bridges, culverts and sign structures) that the public uses in their daily travels. I managed a team of NYSDOT employees and various multi-million-dollar consultant inspection contracts to accomplish this task.

I provided training to the over 300 Professional Engineers who do structural inspection for NYSDOT. During this training, I stressed the following values for being an ASCE member: Professionalism, integrity and credibility shall be associated with all your work.

The Buffalo Section of ASCE has monthly meetings and I feel that the greatest benefit of these meetings is that you meet Civil Engineers who have expertise in various areas of the Civil Engineering Profession. I have used this benefit many times. When Mother Nature flexed her muscles and compromised the integrity of a structure, it was my responsibility to determine if the structure was safe. If not, I had to provide repair details to restore its integrity. I would discuss this issue with ASCE members that I had met at meetings to determine if my repair details were practical and could be constructed in the field.

I am proud to be a member of ASCE, which promotes the profession of Civil Engineering.
