Title: Beneficial Use of Slag Cement in Concrete for Specifiers

Speaker: Shawn Kalyn, B. Eng. LEED AP BD+C, Technical Services Engineer, St. Marys Cement Inc.

Presentation Overview:

Today’s concrete has many different performance requirements beyond just compressive strength. Slag cement, when used in combination with Portland cement, can help achieve many requirements that Portland cement cannot achieve on its own. Slag cement has also been shown to yield more consistent results than Fly Ash. This presentation will discuss how and where slag cement comes from, its use in different concrete applications, and project examples where it has been implemented successfully. The presenter will also discuss his years of experience using slag cement within the region and its useful application on roads and bridges, interior and exterior flatwork, combined sewer overflow storage/tunnels, within architectural applications and at water treatment plants.
