Niagara Falls Riverway Meeting Walking Tour

Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest State Park in the U.S. and was created in 1885 as the “Niagara Reservation” to provide a public park to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Niagara Rapids, Falls and Gorge. Join us to see the reconstruction of the parkway from a restricted access roadway to a riverway encouraging pedestrians to utilize the corridor. This technical tour will provide an overview of the design and construction challenges faced by the client and design team to achieve the project objectives. Four specific design and construction elements will be presented during the tour:

• The geotechnical conditions resulting from the use of Power Project spoils at the south end of the project;
• The design considerations related to the transition from the Robert Moses Parkway to the new roundabout at the entrance to the Park;
• The design and construction challenges related to the new pond that was included in the project; and
• Lessons learned about incorporating architectural and landscape elements into a roadway project.

Biography

Jeffrey Lebsack is a Senior Project Manager for Mott MacDonald. Jeff’s 26 years of experience include a broad range of planning and design projects for various modes of transportation. A proponent of complete streets and active transportation, Jeff has recently completed several transformative projects in Western New York. The North Union Street Transformation in Olean and the Riverway project in Niagara Falls have incorporated bicycle and pedestrian facilities, green stormwater infrastructure, significant landscape features, and gateway roundabouts to provide attractive, sustainable transportation for all users.
