Historic Stone Arch Bridge Rehabilitation: Preserving the Past for Sustainability in the Future
Brian J. Carlson, P.E., Senior Structural Engineer, Greenman Pedersen, Inc.
Michael J. Mann, P.E., Principal Engineer, McMahon & Mann Consulting Engineers, P.C.
The South Main Street Bridge is a historic arch bridge built circa 1872 and comprised of two stone arches with two abutments, a center pier, and stone spandrel walls and parapets. A 2014 inspection detected severe deterioration of the arches, thereby compromising support of the bridge. Based on the historic nature of the bridge, it was decided to rehabilitate the structure instead of replacing it. During the rehabilitation, the original structure was exposed, providing an interesting snapshot into construction techniques in the late 1800’s.
This presentation will review the project focusing on the foundation improvement work done, rehabilitation of the arch barrels, spandrel walls and parapets. Additionally, we will discuss the impact utilities had on the project, and focus on lessons learned through the process of restoring this 140+ year-old structure.
