Program Description

If you wish to bring engineering to eager, young minds, you will find this program rewarding and fulfilling. Please contact George Cotroneo to volunteer today!

The ASCE Buffalo Section is once again running the Engineering Expressions Program! This year's program will be held at Buffalo Waterfront School on Friday, February 12. There will be approximately 200 students participating in the program. We are in need of volunteers to assist in putting on the program.

For those unfamiliar with the program, we go to a school for about half a day and have four different sessions on various aspects of engineering. The first three sessions are: Structures, Materials and Engineering Drawings. These are hands-on sessions and require some supervision of the students. The fourth session is a combination of a video presentation and demonstrations of various tools, simple machines and concepts of engineering.

We will have 2 classrooms for each session, with 18 to 20 students in each class. For each classroom, we need a minimum of 2 volunteers, preferably 3. We will need a minimum of 8 volunteers in the video/demonstrations area. A total of 25 to 30 volunteers are needed for the program.

We will also need 2 or 3 volunteers on Wednesday from about 2:00 to 4:30 PM to help bring materials from the storage unit to the school and to set up displays. Upon completion of the program on Friday another 2 to 3 volunteers are needed to assist in dissembling the materials and returning them to the storage unit.

After an introduction to the assembled students in the auditorium, they will be divided into eight groups. Two of each group will proceed to one of the four sessions. These sessions will last about 40 minutes and we will allow about 5 minutes for the students to move from one session to the next. There will also be a short break for the students and volunteers to have lunch. Lunch will be provided to the volunteers.
